IAFF / SPFF Ebola Information

Brothers and Sisters:

We want you to know we are always concerned for your safety and as such have sent the letter pasted below to each of your Department's Fire Chief. For your safety and information we recommend you go to the IAFF link posted below and review the info provided to your employer.

We are extremely worried about the threat posed to First Responders by the Ebola virus.  I am not specifically aware of what individual Fire/EMS departments we represent are doing to educate, equip, and protect First  Responders but we know the exposures have dire consequences including death in 50% of the cases. It is especially disconcerting that the recommended measures to protect initially provided by the CDC seem to have also fallen short.  If you have not already done so, we request that you appraise our unit representatives of the steps being taken to protect personnel from this deadly virus.

Here is the link to the IAFF’s Ebola education efforts.

State Politics NEWS

Crist has tapped Omar Khan to be his campaign manager, filling a position that has been vacant since Crist's first choice for the job backed out.
"I love him," Crist said of Khan in a statement released by the campaign. "He loves Florida. He's coming home to help us put the people back in charge." Khan, a University of South Florida graduate, was deputy political director in Florida for President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign and served as national associate political director on Obama's re-election bid. Khan is also the former director of congressional and intergovernmental relations for the Hurricane Sandy Task Force and has worked at the Environmental Protection Agency.
"He's smart, savvy, and as a Floridian, understands how important electing Charlie Crist is to the middle class," said Jim Messina, an aide to Crist.
With the release this week of his new book, "The Party's Over: How the Extreme Right Hijacked the GOP and I Became a Democrat," former Florida Governor Charlie Crist will embark on a three-week, whirlwind promotional tour stretching from the television studios of New York City to the independent book stores of South Florida.
Crist's book is being billed as a no-holds-barred memoir, detailing his opinion on how right-wing extremists captured the Republican Party.
Among the appearances Crist is scheduled to make: a Tuesday morning feature on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," followed by an appearance that night on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report." On Wednesday, Crist is slated to appear on CNN's "Piers Morgan Live." After additional appearances on CNN,  Fox and MSNBC, Crist will wrap up the first week of his tour on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher."
The following week, Crist will crisscross Florida, appearing at book signings in several cities. Final locations, dates, and times are still being firmed up, according to publisher Dutton, but a first draft of the schedule has Crist marking the fifth anniversary of "The Hug" in Fort Myers, the city where the then-Republican governor famously embraced President Barack Obama and his stimulus program.
Crist writes in the book that at the time he thought the event was an "uplifting moment" in his political life, where a Democrat and Republican were working together and rising above the partisanship.
"I didn't know it yet. But that high-spirited day in Fort Myers - meeting Obama (bad enough) and greeting him with a hug (even worse) - ended my viable life as a Republican politician."
After a series of other signings, Crist will conclude the book tour on Feb. 22 at Haslam's Book Store in St. Petersburg.

Placement of Political Signs

Political Sign Volunteers:

Thanks for all your enthusiasm and hard work! Remember, when placing signs make sure that they are located on the designated property and not in the County right-of-way. If you have any questions when putting signs up, call your DVP or the candidate's representative for advice.

The following candidates have asked if our members would be on the lookout for improperly placed signs and either collect or reposition them as needed:

Services Set for Slain Fireman

Services Set for Slain Fireman

Lt. Sam P. Dreher II is not alone. Charlotte County firefighters are taking turns standing guard over Dreher’s body. Charlotte County Fire/EMS spokeswoman Dee Hawkins said they will continue to stand beside Dreher until his burial Saturday.

Dreher, 39, was shot outside a Sarasota apartment Saturday by his estranged wife’s boyfriend, Michael Minor, 27, authorities have said. Dreher died from his injuries Sunday.

The 18-year veteran of Charlotte County Fire/EMS will be remembered at a visitation today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Larry Taylor Funeral Home, 1515 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center in Punta Gorda. Burial will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, where Dreher’s father is buried, said Taylor.

The Charlotte County Fire/EMS Honor Guard will be present at the service Saturday, along with honor guards from other agencies, Hawkins said.

The sudden, shocking death of Dreher — known as Sammy — has greatly affected his fellow firefighters and paramedics.

“We’re just taking care of each other, checking on each other,” Hawkins said.

Dreher’s Battalion Chief, Jon Miller, has “shown a tremendous amount of support,” Hawkins said, as have Battalion Chiefs Mark Crigler and James Stillwagon.

“Everybody’s suffering the loss,” Hawkins said. “Everyone’s feeling the pain.”

Critical incident stress management teams are working with crews at each of the fire stations across Charlotte County, Hawkins said.

“We’ll get through this as a group together,” Hawkins said. “Sammy was such a wonderful person.”

Dreher, a North Port resident and a graduate of Charlotte High School, worked as a firefighter and paramedic, in addition to serving on the Marine Operations Team. He also worked for the Punta Gorda Fire Department prior to Charlotte County Fire/EMS.

Memorial donations in Dreher’s honor can be made at any Sun Trust Bank to Firefighters for Kids of Charlotte County.
